Hillside Residence: A Nostalgic Wooden House with a Modern Twist

A Unique Blend of Tradition and Innovation

The Hillside Residence, designed by Makoto Furihata, is a private house that combines traditional Japanese architecture with modern design elements. Situated on a sloping site in Machida city, Tokyo, this elegant residence offers a nostalgic experience for its owner while providing a comfortable and relaxing living space.

The inspiration for the Hillside Residence came from the client's childhood memories of playing on the hillside and the breathtaking views of Tanzawasan, one of Japan's famous mountains. Furihata aimed to create a design that would evoke a sense of nostalgia and allow the client to reconnect with the site. The result is a wooden house with a large garden that pays homage to the client's upbringing.

One of the unique features of this design is its integration with the sloping terrain. The site presented a challenge due to its steep slope, requiring special construction techniques. Furihata addressed this by creating an underground parking lot that also serves as a retaining structure. The parking entrance and square were elevated 2.5 meters higher than the front road, allowing for the construction of the wooden house on top.

The materials used in the Hillside Residence reflect the traditional values of Japanese architecture. Wood and stucco, materials that have been cherished for centuries, were chosen to create a warm and inviting atmosphere. The craftsmanship of skilled artisans further enhances the beauty and tranquility of the space.

With a width of 21 meters and a depth of 12 meters, the Hillside Residence spans two stories above the reinforced concrete basement floor. The site area covers 672.48 square meters, providing ample space for the house and the surrounding garden.

Designed to promote relaxation and comfort, the Hillside Residence offers a serene living environment. The open garden and south-facing orientation allow for abundant natural light and stunning views of the mountains. It is a place where the client can unwind and feel at ease.

The Hillside Residence project began in January 2011 and was completed in July 2012. Throughout the design process, Furihata focused on harmonizing the architecture with the surrounding climate and drawing inspiration from traditional Japanese design principles.

This exceptional design has been recognized with the Iron A' Design Award in the Architecture, Building, and Structure Design category. The award acknowledges the Hillside Residence's well-designed, practical, and innovative features that meet professional and industrial requirements. It is a testament to Furihata's ability to integrate industry best practices and technical characteristics while creating a space that brings fulfillment and positive feelings to its occupants.

With the Hillside Residence, Makoto Furihata has successfully blended tradition and innovation, creating a unique and nostalgic living space that offers modern comforts and a connection to the past. This remarkable design stands as a testament to the beauty and versatility of Japanese architecture.
